More Volcanic Action in Iceland

Just over a Year ago from when the John Bentley School visited Iceland and got to see an eruption in action, Iceland is at it again. The Grimsvotn volcano (see picture) sits under Icelands biggest Ice cap Vatnajokull, has sent a huge column of ash into the sky much bigger than last years eruption. The first thoughts are that the eruption will not cause the same amount of travel disruption but at present flights from Scotland are being cancelled as the ash cloud heads south towards the UK. Grimsvotn is Icelands most active volcano and last erupted in 2004. In October of last year Harmonic tremor (magma moving up to the surface) was noticed and increased meltwater from the glacier suggested an eruption was imminent! To find out more click here
